About the crucible and the tradgedy of public humiliation and reputation
Monica Lewinsky speaks of her public shame and humiliation of her largely publicized scandal with the president. She speaks of how others ruined her reputation and created an actual danger to her and risk to her family. Her humiliation made it possible for her to cause harm or kill herself which really worried her family yet everybody commenting on the scandal seemed to forget she was a human being not just the-other-woman.
The destructive power of her scandal and its effect is why people in Salem were so scared to relay the truth. Even when people don't have the truth they can use their observations to create something possibly more dangerous, a story. Stories made from partial facts should be feared because in peoples' minds imagination can make impossible things seem very possible, like witches working with the devil among them. |
